Phones for Seniors

Which phone is the best simple phone for a senior is not a single answer. It depends on how simple you want the phone to be, and what your priorities are in terms of features and other factors. In many cases, the idea is to minimize the complexity and therefore the functionality of the phone. The reduced number of options makes it easier to learn and retain an understanding of the basic functions. In other cases, the most important feature is a medical alert capability (i.e. 5 Star from GreatCall). Or, it may be that the most important feature is a phone that works well with hearing aids.

The concept of phone specifically designed for seniors is based around the idea that a simpler phone is easier for a senior to work effectively. As we age, our ability to grasp new concepts decreases. That is not to denigrate our senior citizens but that is a fact of aging for most people.  Therefore, the simpler the new concept the more likely we are to grasp it effectively. Since most people who are currently considered “seniors” are digital immigrants and not digital natives, they didn’t grow up with these capabilities and have to learn them at an older age which makes the learning less “sticky”.

In any case, there are a wide variety of carriers plans and phones to meet everyone’s needs including, and especially, our senior citizens.

Below I have summarized and provided links to some of the phones and websites that review or offer phones specially designed for seniors.
